A petty incident between members of an Indian funeral procession and a Malay wedding celebration ignited what has been called Malaysia’s worst ethnic violence in three decades on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. The conflict began in a working class suburb and spread to more affluent areas of Petaling Jaya, Kelana Jaya and Sungai Way. At least six people were killed and more than 150 arrested. A heavy police presence has brought the situation under control.

Opposition parties are planning major demonstrations in Kuala Lumpur Apr. 14 to mark the second anniversary of the conviction of Anwar Ibrahim. The former deputy prime minister is serving a 15-year prison term on what are widely believed to be trumped up charges. Protests could be spirited, so steer clear.

Travelers are beginning to return to Sipadan island and the nearby Sabah state port of Semporna, a year after Abu Sayyaf rebels from the Philippines abducted more than 20 tourists and staff from a dive resort on the island. The U.S. State Department still warns travelers away, but Europeans and Asians are finding the area secure, with hundreds of troops guarding the island and the port. Air and boat patrols have bolstered security in the Sulu and Celebes seas, and the Abu Sayyaf are under siege in the Philippines. It is still highly advisable, however, to visit only areas that have a visible security presence, because the region has a long tradition of lawlessness.
