By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The heaviest rainfall in 20 years has flooded large sections of Santiago and Valparaiso, creating official disaster areas in both cities. Tens of thousands were driven from their homes, power failures occurred and the main road crossing the Andes to Argentina was closed by heavy snow. On the plus side, Santiago’s polluted air has been cleansed and ski conditions will be excellent once the region recovers from the storms.
