By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Violence raged again over the weekend between Muslims and Christians in the city of Ambon in the Maluku Islands, prompting the call for martial law in the region. President Abdurrahman Wahid has resisted such measures in the past, but he has ordered more troops to the area. He also imposed a ban on nonresidents traveling to the Malukus because of reports outsiders were instigating the violence.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The ongoing hostilities in the Maluku Islands are getting worse. The Indonesian military was observed joining Muslims in battles with Christians in Ambon July 16. The development caused President Abdurrahman Wahid to consider seeking outside help to bring the unrest under control, a move that would relieve Christians but possibly enrage Muslims. The region is under a state of emergency giving the military and local officials more authority, but this is little comfort to Christians when soldiers take part in the fighting themselves.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta reported Sept. 20 that it had indications that the recent wave of bombings in Jakarta may escalate and American interests may be targeted. A bomb exploded Sept. 13 at the Jakarta Stock Exchange killing 15 people and injuring dozens. Several smaller blasts have occurred in areas of Jakarta frequented by expatriates but no one has claimed responsibility. Remain alert for suspicious packages.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The long-awaited impeachment of President Abdurrahman Wahid has occurred with an overwhelming vote to remove him from office. It is too early to tell if this action by the legislature will usher in a new era of political stability or send the country further reeling with political violence, but significant unrest is possible. Defer travel here until the ramifications become clear.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Anti-Americanism is on the rise here, sparked by the conflict in the Middle East. The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta closed its consular and visa sections for a week in response to ongoing protests and a lack of commitment by the Indonesian government to provide security. Tensions between the embassy and senior Indonesian officials are growing over the perceived spreading of disinformation by government ministers. Further, groups of Muslim radicals searched hotels for Americans in the city of Solo and gave them 48 hours to leave the area. Whether this sort of incident will spread to other cities remains to be seen.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The army is taking a firm stand on the independence movement in Irian Jaya, intimidating an independence celebration Dec. 1, killing ten people in skirmishes with bow-wielding separatists Dec. 2, and occupying the independence group’s headquarters Dec. 3. A Swiss tourist was arrested for violating his tourist visa by taking pictures of the raid; travel to the region is risky with the army seemingly waiting for a reason to crack down.
