Abu Sayyaf rebels are giving outsiders lots of reasons to avoid Jolo, the island in the Sulu Archipelago where they have their base. While holding hostages taken from Malaysia’s Sipadan Island, they’ve been visited by journalists and humanitarians, and have taken four of the former and thirteen of the latter hostage as well. Unless ransoms are paid it appears unlikely the hostages will be released.

Impeachment papers have been presented to embattled President Joseph Estrada, and a national day of civil disobedience is planned for Nov. 27. The protests will likely shut down business and transit throughout the country, and rallies may continue until the president steps down or is convicted and removed from office. In central Mindanao, Muslim rebels have threatened to carry out attacks during the month of Ramadan and the army has tightened security. Consider deferring travel to Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur until the holy month has passed.

Five bomb blasts rocked Manila Dec. 30 creating a climate of fear and uncertainty. Police and presidential spokespeople blamed Muslim or communist rebels, while opposition leaders suggested the bombs may have been planted by pro-government forces to distract the nation from the ongoing impeachment trial of President Joseph Estrada. Until clear responsibility is established it will be impossible to predict whether a threat of more bombings exists.

Mayon volcano in Albay province has been erupting since June 24 and is likely to have a major eruption within days. Some 45,000 people have been evacuated from villages on the mountain’s slopes and at its base. Curious travelers should heed the warnings and stay out of the official four mile danger zone; further, mudflows and other volcanic debris can travel well beyond the base of the mountain along rivers and gullies, and travelers should steer clear of such areas.
