By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The U.S. has no permanent diplomatic presence in Sudan because the State Department believes that the Sudanese government cannot adequately ensure the safety of U.S. officials. From time to time a Cairo-based U.S. consular officer visits Sudan to reassess the situation, but without a permanent officer there it is very difficult to provide any emergency consular services.
