Torrential rains swept away hillsides in impoverished areas of Rio de Janeiro Jan. 3, killing 11 and forcing thousands from their homes. Roads were blocked, including the Dutra Highway between Rio and Sao Paulo, and 14 towns in neighboring Minas Gerais state were declared emergency areas. The crisis, however, didn’t affect the tourist sites in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
