When the Khmer Rouge finally gave up their long battle with the government in 1998, the Cardamom Mountains, where they’d hidden away for years, opened up for the first time since the 1960s. Animals previously believed to be extinct in the wild were discovered there, and predictably, loggers began to jockey for position. Now it appears the area will be conserved in an agreement between donor nations and the Cambodian government. Once the agreement is official the area may be made a national park.
