Indonesia
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Violence between Christians and Muslims in the Maluku Islands has spawned large anti-Christian demonstrations in Jakarta, with Muslims calling for a jihad against Christians in the area formerly known as the Spice Islands. Some 50,000 people protested Jan. 7, and analysts warned that the tensions could pose a serious threat to the government, which is at odds with the military about how to defuse the situation. Follow local press reports, and avoid travel to the Maluku Islands.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Religious violence in the Moluku Islands has spread to the island of Lombok, a popular tourist island near Bali. Muslim mobs burned seven Christian churches Jan. 17 in the main town of Mataram to protest the government’s inability to stop violence in the Molukus. Rumors of a possible military coup are building just three months after President Abdurrahman Wahid assumed power. Follow local press reports and avoid demonstrations.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The island of Bali, long a bastion of tolerance and inclusion and a favorite of tourists around the world, is feeling the pressure of Christian-Muslim violence that has erupted on the islands around it. Rumors are flying that similar anti-Christian passions, which in Indonesia largely mean anti-Chinese passions, may erupt here. Religious, community and political leaders are meeting to head off such tensions, and police have stepped up patrols at ports to prevent agitators from importing their hatred.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The U.S. Embassy has received a threat from unidentified sources against U.S. interests, in particular U.S. Government facilities, but possibly also extending to U.S. tourists and tour groups. In view of this threat, travelers should be especially alert to their surroundings and as much as possible try to avoid drawing attention to themselves.
The oil and gas rich province of Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra continues to be plagued with violence and should be avoided.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A group of conservative Muslims has given the government an ultimatum to quell Muslim-Christian violence in the Maluku Islands or they will launch their own jihad to do it themselves. They have also threatened a jihad on the island of Java if the government tries to prevent them from going to the Malukus. Either move would only serve to inflame an already tense environment.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Two years after student protests led to the overthrow of President Suharto, pressure is mounting to bring him to justice for his many years of abusing power. Demonstrations in Jakarta May 13 were suppressed with tear gas, and protests in the mainly Chinese business district turned into riots when police tried to remove street stalls. On a positive note, the government and separatists in the Sumatran province of Aceh reached a cease-fire agreement, possibly paving the way for a peaceful settlement of a conflict that has been simmering for 25 years.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |West Papua, a region in the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya on the island of New Guinea, declared its independence June 4, setting the stage for possible conflict with the Indonesian army. President Abdurrahman Wahid rejected the declaration, and the streets of the West Papuan capital of Jayapura are tense. West Papua has an armed militia, but the use of force would only raise the specter of an East Timor-like conflict.
The bombing of a Protestant church in the North Sumatran capital of Medan, and the attempted bombing of two other churches has raised fears that the Muslim-Christian violence that swept over the Maluku Islands could be coming to Sumatra. Follow local press reports for current updates if traveling here.
