By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A group of heavily armed men abducted 21 tourists and park rangers from the popular dive island of Sipadan off the coast of Sabah state on Borneo Apr. 23. The victims included several nationalities, who were packed in two boats and taken to sea toward the Philippines. Responsibility for the attack was claimed by Abu Sayyaf, Muslim insurgents who were already holding 27 hostages on Basilan Island in the southern Philippines and were under military attack. The group has threatened to kill Americans if the men convicted in the New York World Trade Center bombing are not released from prison. The Sulu Sea, between the Philippines’ Mindanao Island and Borneo, has been prone to piracy and lawlessness for decades.
