Warring factions here have signed a peace agreement which is meant to end two years of conflict between two ethnic groups and pave the way for a return to normalcy. The pact calls for an international force to implement the plan, and Australia is set to take the lead. The conflict has taken the lives of more than 70 people, forced thousands from their homes and produced a coup that toppled the government.

The government has stated that it cannot guarantee the safety of the capital city of Honiara on the island of Guadalcanal because of increased ethnic unrest. Armed militants maintain roadblocks outside the city, and in recent months conflict between rival groups has escalated. Other areas of the islands have not been affected, but travel to Guadalcanal should be deferred.

It appears that coup fever is spreading across the South Pacific. A little more than two weeks after Fiji became engulfed in a coup crisis, a rebel group has taken the prime minister and other government officials hostage in the capital city of Honiara on the island of Guadalcanal. The move followed the cancellation of planned peace talks between rival ethnic groups that have been fighting each other the past 18 months. The conflict is rooted in the growing influence of immigrants from a nearby island in the affairs of Guadalcanal.
