An American was killed Oct. 6 on a busy shopping street in Khobar in a bombing that does not appear to be linked to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the U.S. A string of attacks against foreigners occurred last year and was reported to be related to a lucrative alcohol smuggling operation. This incident, in which another foreigner was killed and three were injured, may have been a similar settling of scores. There is, however, significant resentment of the presence of U.S. forces in Saudi Arabia among the locals.
