Argentina is suffering its worst recession in years and the pinch is especially being felt in the provinces. State employees and the unemployed have been protesting in several regions, with some demonstrations turning into riots. Areas affected include the provinces of Cordoba, Corrientes, Neuquen, Tierra del Fuego and Tucuman.

In a recent poll, 40 percent of people questioned in Buenos Aires said they had been robbed in the past year, but many didn’t report the crime to the police. Crime throughout the city is a serious concern, and the government has tried to control it by adding border police and coast guard officers to street patrols.
