Burma

The anniversary of the pro-democracy uprising that was crushed on August 8, 1988 (8/8/88) passed without incident, but opposition parties have been calling for another uprising on September 9 (9/9/99) and claim that the date is auspicious. The government obviously takes the threat seriously because it claims to have foiled a plot for such an uprising and has warned that any perpetrators will be dealt with severely. Consider deferring travel here until after that date and avoid large gatherings.

Burma

Even a repressive regime can sometimes be reasonable, but there’s a limit. A British citizen was recently sentenced to 17 years in prison for smuggling anti-government literature into the country. Twice before he’d been arrested and deported for anti-government activities, but the third time definitely was not a charm. Consider this incident if contemplating getting involved in Burmese politics.
