An October 2000 peace pact between rival militia groups has produced relative calm and security, but hundreds of automatic weapons remain in the possession of former fighters, the islands are in the middle of a severe economic crisis, and elections are scheduled for December 5. Thus, the security situation could change at any time. Most of the past trouble occurred on the islands of Guadalcanal and Malaita, and in the capital city of Honiara. Interruptions in public service and utilities could also occur because of the economic crisis.
