A powerful car bomb exploded in the middle of a diplomatic quarter in the capital city of Sanaa Aug. 28, killing at least two people, destroying a supermarket where many foreigners shop and damaging several diplomatic buildings. Two other minor bombings occurred elsewhere in the country the same night. Analysis varies, but some feel the Sanaa bomb was a warning from Islamic militants about attacks to come if a death sentence against their leader, which was upheld on appeal earlier in August, is carried out. Others suggested the attack was against the supermarket owner, who died in the blast, in a business dispute. If the bomb had been detonated during the day there would have been many casualties, including foreigners. The U.S. Embassy is in a distant neighborhood and was not affected by the bombing. Follow local reports and remain alert to your surroundings.
