By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Escalating conflict in the southern Philippines has prompted Malaysia to increase patrols along the coast of Sabah state in Borneo to prevent incursions of rebels fleeing the conflict. The possibility of refugees arriving in large numbers also exists, especially in the area around Sandakan. Military checkpoints have been set up along the coast and aircraft are patrolling the area around the clock. If incidents occur, travel in the area could be disrupted.
