Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park, home to many of the world’s last mountain gorillas, has reopened to tourists after a long closure following the 1994 genocide in which over 800,000 people were slaughtered. While Rwandan officials guarantee the security of visitors, with army patrols attempting to ensure that no Hutu rebels cross from Congo, remember that borders in this region are quite permeable. The killing by Hutu rebels of eight gorilla-seeking trekkers in March took place nearby in neighboring Uganda. No tour operators have yet offered to take their clients to Rwanda, but visitors of course can get there on their own.
