Annual spring dust storms blanketed Beijing last week, obscuring Mao’s mammoth portrait in Tiananmen Square, reducing visibility and covering the city with dirt. Authorities advised people to stay indoors to avoid breathing the gritty air. The sand storms blow in from the northwest, sweeping across the Mongolian plains. Deforestation and drought have exacerbated the problem in recent years, and long term conditions are unlikely to improve.
