India/Pakistan
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Tensions over Kashmir are reaching a boiling point after a suicide bombing at an Indian army camp killed 34 people, including soldiers’ wives and children, May 14. India/Pakistan
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Hopes are high for a new era of cooperation between these nations which have been at odds since their partition in 1947. The Indian prime minister traveled by bus to meet his Pakistani counterpart February 20 and inaugurated a new overland route between the two countries. Talks spanned the entire range of concerns, including the disputed region of Kashmir which has been the cause of three wars. No major breakthroughs were announced, but the meeting was symbolically significant, especially since both countries exploded nuclear devices last summer causing tensions in the region to rise dramatically.
