A British oil worker and his son were kidnapped February 14 in the southern delta region. The impoverished area, which produces the bulk of Nigeria’s oil riches but sees little economic gain in return, has been simmering with discontent in recent months. Oil companies and their employees have been the principal targets of demonstrations and kidnappings, but any travel to the area should be undertaken with caution. Another oil worker was kidnapped February 9, and eight others were abducted in November but were released unharmed.
