Papua New Guinea

National elections will be held in mid-June. Political rallies and demonstrations are likely before the vote and in the weeks after the results are announced. In the past some of these demonstrations have turned violent, especially in the Highlands region. Crime is high, especially in Port Moresby. Road travel outside the city at night should be avoided because of the high incidence of criminals setting up roadblocks. Many remote areas are accessible by air and the best way to travel safely is with an established tour agency or with local sponsoring agencies or businesses.
