Indonesians took to the polls in the first democratic election in more than forty years June 7 with high hopes for a new political era. A good sign is that little of the violence that was feared occurred; a bad sign is the glacial pace of vote counting. With every day that passes worries rise that the count is being corrupted. The final results could be met with unrest if it appears that the ruling Golkar party received more votes than popularly believed. Consider deferring travel here until the final count is in and the reaction is clear.

Many areas of Indonesia are subject to unrest and violence, especially as a general election nears, but Bali remains relatively free of such tensions. The popular tourist island saw some ethnic violence in December and January in the isolated community of Bandjar, on the north coast west of Singaraja. The conflict occurred between two clans that have a history of tension, both political and personal. Areas frequented by tourists on Bali are reasonably safe, with the greatest crime risk from pickpockets and purse snatchers. The greatest danger for tourists comes from motorbike accidents. Renting motorbikes is popular here, and roads are narrow, traffic is congested and drivers are aggressive. Tourists with little experience on motorcycles often find themselves in accidents, some deadly.

A bomb blast outside a disco in Central Jakarta and the discovery of two other homemade bombs has authorities worried that the city is facing another cycle of violence after a relatively calm period since January 1. Jakarta suffered a series of bombings in 2000 and 2001, with the last occurring on New Year’s Day this year. The incident comes after a recent death sentence given to three men convicted of a similar bombing last August.
