Nicaragua
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Heavy rains have caused extensive flooding mainly in the Pacific Ocean coastal region, with the worst damage in Managua and Rivas to the south. Managua’s international airport was shut down temporarily and roads and bridges were washed out. As many as 30,000 people have been driven from their homes. Health officials are concerned about an increase in infectious diseases such as malaria and dengue fever because of stagnant pools of water left behind in the floods’ aftermath where mosquitoes will breed. Many of those evacuated were suffering from fever, diarrhea, respiratory problems and skin problems.
