By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Immigration officials now require Americans to have at least six months validity remaining on their passports to enter the country. Enforcement has been sporadic, but some Americans have been denied entry as a result. Protests against President Hugo Chavez continue, with counter-protests by his supporters. There are rumors of another coup and political unrest is possible, especially in Caracas. Further, military promotions will be announced July 5, and may inflame political passions. Americans should avoid travel within 50 miles of the Colombian border because Colombian terrorist groups have openly targeted Americans for kidnapping. Robberies of arriving passengers both inside and outside the international airport terminal in Caracas have increased. Use official airport taxis, black Ford Explorers with yellow insignias on the doors. Fares can be pre-paid inside the terminal at the yellow taxi booth.
