The U.S. Consulate in Karachi suspended operations Aug. 5 when authorities reopened a street in front of it that had been the site of a June 14 car-bombing that killed 12. Abdullan Haroon Road had been closed after that attack, then later had one lane opened. The removal of concrete blocks and reopening of the lane nearest the consulate spurred the State Department to shut down the facility until a mutually acceptable arrangement can be found to guarantee security at the compound.
