Internet cafes are tightly regulated and access to the Web is censored here, but recently the Chinese government blocked access to Google and AltaVista search engines, fearing that they represented loopholes in the battle to control what the Chinese people read. Many sources of “sensitive information” get routinely blocked here, including major Western newspapers and media sites. For travelers this may mean minor inconveniences; for foreign businesspeople it could mean the difference between an enterprise’s success or failure; for the Chinese, it means that obtaining unbiased information about world events and internal politics may be difficult if not impossible.
