In view of the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S., the State Department has, not surprisingly, renewed its worldwide caution for Americans traveling overseas, citing a continued terrorist threat to Americans and U.S. facilities, both official and informal, including places where Americans tend to congregate such as clubs, restaurants and places of worship. The government continues to receive credible indications of plots against American interests, and maintains a heightened state of alert at all facilities. The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia and the Consulate General in Surabaya have been closed until further notice because of a “credible and specific threat” of terrorist attacks. The U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has been closed for the same reason. American embassies have been closed for precautions in Bahrain, Cambodia, Malawi, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates.
