Brazil
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |According to official crime statistics, an average of seven tourists are assaulted per day in Rio de Janeiro, with American, French and German tourists being the most common targets. During the first six months of the year, 63 percent of tourist robberies, or 528 incidents, took place in Copacabana. The downtown area had 48 incidents, Santa Teresa 43, Ipanema 41, and Gloria 20. Of the 836 tourist robberies in this period, no violence occurred in 734 incidents, but guns or knives were used in almost all cases. Copacabana had the highest number of assaults even though it has the highest police presence. Most robberies occur on the beaches in front of hotels on Clara Saint Street, and occur between 8 and 10 p.m.
