Crime is low here but pickpockets in Prague are very adept, working in groups as large as six or eight to focus on an individual target. Sometimes the groups are families of varying ages and genders, who work the train stations and crowded trams, especially when the victim is entering or exiting, and tourist areas such as the Charles Bridge, Wenceslas and Old Town Squares. Changing money on the street is illegal, and a common scam is for a local to engage the visitor in friendly conversation, then to be approached by another who identifies himself as an undercover police officer investigating illegal currency exchange. He demands to see the touristÂ’s money and before handing it back with a warning, palms some bills. Never take out your money to show anyone, and use ATMs to obtain local currency.
