A deteriorating political situation has devastated the economy, causing high rates of inflation and unemployment and an increase in crime. Nationwide fuel shortages have disrupted transportation and about half the population faces food shortages and possible famine. Migration to the cities or border areas in the coming months is possible with an attendant increase in crime and instability. Only essential travel should be undertaken here.

Its tourism industry in a shambles because of President Robert Mugabe’s determination to retain power at any cost, Zimbabwe has seen hotel occupancy rates at Victoria Falls plummet to four percent. For generations the falls, one of the world’s great natural wonders, has been a top African attraction. Now an Australian tourist was found slain in what appears to have been a robbery attempt at one of the most popular viewing areas, a fenced rain forest in the mist above the falls. The spot is supposedly well guarded.
