In the context of a possible war with Iraq, the State Department has renewed its “Worldwide Caution” public announcement reminding travelers of the ongoing security risks to Americans throughout the world. The advisory cites heightened terrorist threats that may target civilians and the possibility of attacks with non-conventional weapons. The department also issued travel warnings for several countries in the Middle East, advising that it has authorized the departure of dependents and non-emergency personnel at the U.S. embassies and consulates in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. A further warning on travel to Iraq stated that the U.S. Interests Section at the Polish Embassy in Baghdad has been temporarily closed and there are no consular services available to Americans in Iraq at this time.
