World Cup cricket matches are scheduled for late February here, and the Australian government has warned its citizens to consider avoiding travel to Zimbabwe to support their team. The warning is based on Australian intelligence that the opposition plans to use the matches as forums for demonstrations against President Robert Mugabe and his government, and all indications are that police would put down the protests forcefully. Australian officials are trying to persuade the International Cricket Council to move the matches to another country.
