Italy

Mountains of garbage spilled into the streets of Naples for two weeks just as the tourist season was about to begin because there was no place to take it. All dump sites are full to capacity and the city is scrambling to find a long-term solution. The stink created numerous loud and violent protests but luckily other regions of Italy agreed to take the garbage for now. The crisis was brought on by a failure to implement waste management programs legislated 30 years ago and the involvement of organized crime in the illegal dumping business. The streets have been mostly cleared now, but the problem could arise again in the future.
