Indonesia
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The Aug. 5 bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta is a reminder that the threat of terrorist attacks here is real. The U.S. government believes that terrorists may be planning further attacks against U.S. interests, officials or facilities, and as security is tightened, could choose softer targets, such as places where foreigners congregate. Last October’s attack in Bali and the bombing of the Marriott Hotel fit this profile. Jemaah Islamiah, the terrorist organization responsible for both attacks, has links to al Qaeda. The U.S. State Department recommends deferring all non-essential travel to Indonesia.

Indonesia
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A car bomb exploded at the Jakarta Marriott Hotel Aug. 5 killing at least 15 people and injuring close to 150. Analysts believe the suicide attack was the work of Jemaah Islamiah, the regional terrorist organization responsible for the Bali bombing last October. The attack came just days before the first verdicts in the Bali bomb trial were expected. The luxury J.W. Marriott Hotel opened in 2001 and is used by the U.S. Embassy to house temporary duty personnel. Most of the victims were Indonesian. No Americans were killed in the attack.
