The Muslim holy month of Ramadan has begun, a time when Muslims must fast during daylight hours. In most Islamic areas, foreigners are not expected to fast, and daytime meals can usually be obtained, especially in hotels that cater to foreigners. General services may be reduced, so be prepared for inconveniences if you have business to attend to. Showing respect for the custom of fasting will win friends; complaining about it will do the opposite. In Saudi Arabia, the U.S. Embassy warned its citizens to be especially cautious during the holy fasting month because terrorists there may choose to attack at this time. The British Foreign Office issued a similar warning.
