This nation has the highest incidence of reported rape on the planet. It also has one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates. Female travelers should be especially careful where they go, and especially if they are traveling alone. An American woman and her South African female companion were raped and beaten recently in the town of Mafeking, about 150 miles to the west of Pretoria, the capital.
