On June 2, the anniversary of the Republic, a military parade will shut down several roads in the heart of the city, and on June 4, an anti-war protest and general strike will be held. The protesters hope to shut down the city with their strike and “anti-Bush” demonstrations.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |State rail and maritime workers rescheduled a 24-hour strike originally planned for May 13 to May 20-21. If held as scheduled, the strike will begin at 9 p.m. and is likely to affect rail and ferry service throughout the country.

By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Ailing Alitalia was hit by several days of strikes that caused hundreds of flight cancellations and stranded thousands of travelers before workers went back on the job May 3 in advance of talks between union officials and the Italian government. Workers have been protesting expected plans to cut thousands of jobs in an effort to make the airline solvent, and further strikes are possible if negotiations don’t go well for the unions.
