Portugal
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Portugal will be busy with large-scale events this summer that will draw millions of people to various parts of the country. On the 13th day of each month from June through October some 400,000 pilgrims are expected to visit the town of Fatima. Lisbon’s “Rock in Rio” outdoor music festival from May 28 to June 6 is expected to draw half a million people. Portugal will host the “Euro 2004″ European soccer championship from June 12 to July 4, with matches held in eight cities: Aveiro, Braga Coimbra, Faro, Guimaraes, Leiria, Lisbon and Oporto. More than a million soccer tickets have been sold and some three million people are expected to visit Portugal for the matches. Bear in mind that soccer hooliganism has occurred at these championships before, including violence between supporters of opposing teams both in the stadiums and surrounding streets, and could happen again. Large-scale events are also potential targets for terrorist attacks. The government is taking precautions, and visitors should remain alert at all times.
