United Kingdom
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Citing talks that have made little progress, workers on the London Underground and Britain’s national rail network have planned the first national 24-hour strike in more than a decade for June 29. The strike was originally scheduled for June 10 but called off because of promising talks with the government, but now the strike has been approved by union members. It will begin at 6:29 p.m. on June 29 and end at the same time the next day. The strike, if held as planned, will cause significant inconvenience throughout Britain, but especially in London.

United Kingdom
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The British Automobile Association and European motoring agencies conducted a safety investigation of 34 ferries throughout Europe and found that British car ferries, which had poor safety records four years ago, are now among the safest in Europe. Ferries around Greece and the eastern Mediterranean were the worst. Common problems of those that did poorly in the study were difficulty of accessing fire-fighting equipment and poor performance of crews in emergency drills. All eight British vessels graded in the study were found to be good or very good. The vessel with the highest rating was the Italian-operated Excelsior.
