Argentina
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A peaceful rally to protest a government plan to change the civil code for Buenos Aires erupted into violence July 16 when protesters attacked the city legislature building with rocks and slingshots. Several people were injured. The protest came on the heels of another protest by people who had lost their savings in the 2002 currency devaluation. They occupied a federal court complex after the Supreme Court ruled against a depositor in a suit against the government. Both incidents confirm that tensions continue to simmer two years after the country’s worst ever economic crisis.
