India
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Spurred by an alleged rape of a Japanese student by her Indian guide, the West Bengal government has moved toward creating a new tourist police force in Calcutta to look after both foreign and domestic tourists. The plan calls for tourist police to be trained especially to help foreigners and posted throughout the city at popular tourist sites. The state’s tourism minister called for the force to be put in place as soon as possible both to assist visitors to Calcutta and to reassure potential visitors that the city is safe. In an unrelated matter, a party leader in the state congress called for a 12-hour bandh, a general strike, Aug. 2 to protest changes in state government judicial procedures. If successful, the strike would be the third bandh this year and would shut down Calcutta for the day.

India
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |India has the world’s largest rail network serving some 13 million daily passengers, and much of its infrastructure needs repair. Accidents are an almost daily occurrence, but the task of improving the system appears to be beyond the reach of mere mortals. According to comments to the Times of India, the government’s railways minister places responsibility for the safety of trains and passengers in the hands of Vishwakarma, the Hindu god of machines. Regardless of who’s in charge, traveling by train remains a good way to move around the country. In the air, security has been increased on Air-India flights to Dubai after officials received credible reports of a hijack threat to the airline on flights between Dubai and India.
