Pro-democracy demonstrations that turned violent in Male prompted the president to impose a state of emergency, giving him the power to take any necessary steps to maintain order. An indefinite curfew is in effect. Until recently, protests have been rare here, breaking out for the first time last year. Demonstrators have been seeking democratic reforms, but none have been implemented in this island nation where political parties are banned and the president has been in power for 26 years.
