British Airways reached agreement with employees to avert a strike that could have caused havoc for travelers at several UK airports Aug. 27-31. The deal calls for an 8.5 percent raise in pay over three years and two bonuses, and should put an end to strike threats at the airline for the foreseeable future.

If negotiations fail to settle a pay dispute, British Airways check-in and baggage workers will stage a 24-hour strike any day from Aug. 27 to 31. The action will take place at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports and could affect four more UK airports if additional employees vote to join the strike. The walkout will begin at 3:30 a.m. and will severely disrupt the airlines’ flights.
