Austria

A recent series of gruesome murders in Vienna has Austrians on edge, and indeed crime increased in the city more than 20 percent between 2002 and 2003. But Vienna is still dramatically safer than many international cities. Austria’s murder rate is 1.17 per 100,000 people compared to 5.7 in the U.S. and 75.3 in South Africa. A slaying in the Vienna Woods has been especially troubling to locals because the woods are a popular place for recreation as well as having been a source of inspiration for composers and artists for hundreds of years. All of the victims and suspects in the recent crimes have been Austrians.
