Both the U.S. State Department and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs advise their citizens to avoid Western hotels in Jakarta because of reports that terrorists are planning attacks against Western facilities or businesses in Indonesia. The State Department recommends avoiding identifiably Western hotels throughout the country, and reminds Americans that targets could include “places where Americans and other Westerners live, congregate, shop or visit, including hotels, clubs, restaurants, shopping centers, identifiably Western businesses, housing compounds, transportation systems, places of worship, schools or public recreation events.”
