The Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins Oct. 15. The first day is a holiday in most Islamic countries, and throughout the month religious observances include abstention from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. In most countries that cater to Western business and tourism, daytime meals can be obtained in hotels and some restaurants. In stricter Muslim countries, daytime meals may only be available in hotels that cater to Westerners.
