Israel

The al-Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem, the third-holiest site in Islam, has a weakened foundation and may be in danger of collapsing when thousands of pilgrims congregate for Friday prayers during Ramadan. The Israeli interior security minister said the site must be strengthened or the numbers of worshippers must be reduced, and Muslims charged that the claim is simply a ruse to take control of the mosque. Part of the wall leading to the compound collapsed in February and the mosque’s foundation is unstable. Israeli authorities believe that a major failure is just a matter of time unless urgent repairs are made. The site containing the mosque is known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif, and is sacred to both.
