New Zealand

New Zealand has a reputation for safety but does have crime like any other place. Recent incidents near Rotorua have caused a tourism industry leader to call for safety classifications for tourist sites, so visitors will be less likely to step naively into trouble. Kerosene Creek, a popular hot spring about 12 miles south of the city, has been the site of numerous car break-ins; most recently, three English tourists lost all of their possessions from the trunk of their car. At a remote campground near Minginui, southeast of Rotorua, two German women were trapped in their car by stick-wielding teenagers who demanded money. The women were able to escape only when they tossed a bag of coins out the window.
