Peru
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |In an effort to prevent a resurgence of the violent Maoist group “Shining Path,” authorities have maintained a state of emergency in nine areas of Apurimac, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica and Junin departments for the past year. These are among the country’s poorest regions and the areas where the Shining Path spread much of its terror in the 1980s and 90s. In other news, the World Bank vowed to lend Peru $5 million to preserve the famous Inca site of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Both need protection because increasing tourism has put pressure on the area to the point where UNESCO threatened to put them on its list of endangered sites. One emphasis of the plan is to relocate about 60 families from the town that sprouted in the ravine at the gateway to Machu Picchu because it is vulnerable to landslides. Another focus of the plan is to promote sustainable development and tourism in the area.
