A recent increase in sexual assaults by taxi drivers on female passengers in Copenhagen has officials recommending adding closed-circuit cameras to all city taxis. Two such assaults have occurred in the past month, prompting another ten women to come forward with reports of similar incidents in the past few months. These reports do not describe the same assailant. The video cameras would record the first 15 seconds of a ride and transmit images to a central location for the safety of both the passenger and the driver. In the meantime, officials recommend that passengers phone ahead for taxis rather than hailing them on the street, because then there would be a record of the trip. Beginning Oct. 31, however, a surcharge will be added for doing so.
